Palate Procedures

When it comes to snoring and sleep apnea, a surprising number of problems can come from the soft palate. The soft palate is the back section of the roof of your mouth. If you run your tongue along the roof of your mouth towards the back, you’ll notice the roof becomes soft at a very specific point. That is the soft palate.

The soft palate is comprised of five muscles that play different roles in swallowing and breathing. When patients suffer from sleep apnea, it is often due to a relaxation of one of these muscles. There are several procedures that address the soft palate specifically, preventing it from blocking the airway as you sleep. For patients in need of one of these procedures, there are no better hands than Dr. Aminpour to bring you safely and effectively through the entire treatment.

Pillar® Procedure

Because many problems with snoring and sleep apnea come from a relaxation of tissues in the soft palate, the Pillar® Procedure addresses these directly by strengthening these tissues. It is a short, safe and effective sleep apnea treatment in Los Angeles that takes only about twenty minutes using only local anesthetic.

During the procedure, Dr. Aminpour will place 3 implants into the soft palate. These implants, along with the body’s natural response, adds the necessary support to stiffen the tissues in the soft palate so they no longer fall into the throat while patients are sleeping. Additionally, they prevent vibrations that cause snoring. All in all, the Pillar® Procedure is a proven method to bring lasting results to patients suffering from snoring or sleep apnea.

Palate Radiofrequency

For patients suffering from snoring, palate radiofrequency is a minimally invasive method to overly large tissue that may be responsible. By using the power of radiofrequency, Dr. Aminpour does not need to make any incisions or even use general anesthesia. It’s a procedure that’s performed right in his office in about 10 minutes using local anesthesia. With minimal recovery time and total patient comfort, palate radiofrequency has a long record of happy patients.

During the procedure, local anesthetic is first delivered to the soft palate. Dr. Aminpour then places a radiofrequency electrode into the mouth and inserts it under the soft palate. He then delivers carefully controlled radiofrequency energy through the electrode. The energy creates a controlled lesion underneath the soft palate. Over the several weeks following the procedure, the body will resorb the lesion, which reduces and tightens the soft palate. With its newly reduced size and tighter structure, the soft palate will no longer be the cause of unwanted snoring.

UPPP (UP3)

UPPP is a surgery to directly reduce the size of various tissues in the back of the mouth, including the uvula, tonsils, and any other excess throat tissue. These excess tissues can be responsible for snoring or obstructive sleep apnea, contributing to broken sleep and fatigue during the day. Dr. Aminpour offers UPPP in his Los Angeles office for patients who need a slightly more drastic handling of snoring and sleep apnea.
